Blog: Mapping Failure

August 6, 2024

For decades 403bwise and others have been trumpeting the deplorable state of the K-12 403(b). We now have interactive, visual evidence of the mess that is the K-12 403(b).

How to Use the Map

Click on this link. There are several ways to search...

Search nationally

  • Simply click a district that has been graded (indicated by color range: green equals A-rated; dark red equals F-rated). You can enlarge or shrink map by clicking the "+" sign or "-" sign in the lower right corner of the map.
  • Once you click a color, the name fo the district and a link to it's vendors and grade appears.

Search by state

  • In chart on left, click a state (once) you want to search. Then click on a district in that state that has been graded (colored). You can enlarge or shrink map by clicking the "+" sign or "-" sign in the lower right corner of the map.
  • Once you click a color, the name fo the district and a link to its vendors and grade appears.

How to Improve Your Grade

As you will see, only a small percentage of districts have earned an A. See our Advocacy section for tips on how to improve your district's grade. Join the nearly 17k strong 403bwise Facebook Group. It's a fantastic community of teachers helping each other get out of bad plans, get into better plans, and add better investment choices. Listen (and have colleagues listen as well) to our short pod series Learned by Being Burned: Teachers and the K-12 403(b) (also available on all major podcast platforms). It details why the K-12 403(b) is so bad and more importantly, how to improve the K-12 403(b).

Stay wise and well (and share this map widely),
