Time to Apply Indexing to Sports Fandom?

May 30, 2026

The power of indexing cannot be denied. Buying the haystack trounces targeted stock picking. What John Bogle championed so many years ago has gone from fringe idea to wealth-building bedrock. With the team of my youth — the Buffalo Sabres — falling short (again) of a Stanley Cup Championship is it time to apply indexing to my sports fandom?

My Sports Portfolio

* 2 AFL championships (1964; 1965)
** Numerous conference championships

Safety in Numbers

To be clear I'm not talking about adding say, the Montreal Canadiens, to the list of the teams I cheer for. Boo to that idea or whatever the opposite of Olé! is. I'm talking about adding the entire NHL Eastern Conference. That would give me 15 more chances at Stanley Cup glory. In football I would add the entire American Football Conference. Boom another 15 chances at a Vince Lombardi trophy. You can't hurt me anymore, Tom Brady! In college sports cheering for the conferences of my alma maters San Diego State University and the University of New Mexico would give me an additional 17 chances at a Bowl Championship and an NCAA basketball crown.

Couch Potato Synergy

Indexing has been dubbed couch potato investing. What's more couch potato than sports fandom?

Reality Check

Who am I kidding? In the age of Power 5 dominance, the new Pac 12, which is really the Pac 9 (colleges are bad at math) and the new Mountain West (10 teams) are never winning an NCAA championship in either basketball or football. Yes, I know SDSU reached the basketball NCAA championship game recently (they lost). I think their best player from that team announced he was transferring to a Power 5 school on the flight home.

Power of International Exposure

If anything my sports portfolio points to the power of having an international position, something my partner, Scott Dauenhauer, is alwasy promoting. YNWA.

Beantown Born

What's really the best way to ensure major championship glory? Be born in Boston, a city that boasts 40 major championships. Who owns Liverpool FC? The owners of the Boston Red Sox.

Stay wise and consider indexing all aspects of your life.
